Keeping the tourism dollars flowing
Interview with Carl Wilgus, tourist director, state of Idaho

Wilgus

What is critical to the success of the tourism industry in 2003?

"For us, water is just critical. We need it for the ski season, and also for fishing, rafting, lake recreation and the fire season."

Anything else?

"The economy. Travel and tourism is a discretionary opportunity for people. If they have money in their pocket, they go. If they don't, they don't. We're also looking at the potential for conflict in the Middle East. People may have RVs, but if gas gets up to $2 per gallon, they won't be using them."

What is the economic impact of travel and tourism in Kootenai County?

"About $238 million annually. That represents about 10 percent of the state's value of a $2 billion business. It's obviously a very important county for us when it comes to recreation, travel and tourism."
